In addition to serving as governor, Vance also held the post of U.S. Senator from North Carolina from 1862 to 1868. During his time in the Senate, he was a staunch supporter of the Confederacy and was one of the few Southern senators who refused to resign his seat when the Union took control of North Carolina.
