Zebulon Vance was one of the most influential Southern leaders during the Civil War and postbellum periods. He served as governor of North Carolina from 1862 to 1865, and then as a U.S. senator from 1879 to 1894. Vance was a staunch supporter of the Confederacy, and he helped to lead the state of North Carolina through the difficult years of the Civil War.
