Zephaniah Kingsley Jr. was born in Jamaica in 1766 and moved to South Carolina as a child with his family. He became a successful planter and merchant and owned over 100 slaves. In 1810, he married a former slave, Anna Jai Kingsley, and they had two children together. In 1817, he freed all of his slaves and moved to Haiti with Anna and their children.
