Zico resigned as the coach of Iraq on November 29, 2012, after a poor run of results in the 2014 World Cup qualification campaign. He had been appointed as coach in September 2011, and had led the team to the quarter-finals of the 2011 AFC Asian Cup. However, Iraq failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, and Zico's contract was not renewed.
