John White was born in England around 1539. He was an explorer and a cartographer. He is best known for his role in the founding of the first English colony in the Americas at Roanoke Island in 1585. He returned to England in 1587 but was unable to return to Roanoke Island until 1590, when he found the colony abandoned. White died in England in 1593.
