Alexander Joseph Cronin (1896-1981) was a Scottish author who is best known for his novels The Citadel (1937) and The Keys of the Kingdom (1941). Cronin worked as a medical inspector of mines in the North East of England in the early 1920s, and this experience provided him with the inspiration for many of his novels.
