Visvesvaraya initially worked as a civil engineer for the Government of British India. He was appointed the chief engineer of the Mysore State in 1899 and later became the Dewan of Mysore. He was responsible for the construction of many important public works projects in Mysore, including the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam, the Mysore Palace, and the Bangalore Palace.
