M. Visvesvaraya was an Indian civil engineer, statesman and the first Indian engineer to be knighted. He was born on 15 September 1861 in Chikkaballapur, Karnataka. He studied civil engineering at the College of Engineering, Pune and later went on to work on several major engineering projects in India, including the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam and the Bhakra Dam.
