Rostom Khan invaded the Kingdom of Kakheti on behalf of Abbas II, the Safavid Shah of Persia. The Persian army invaded the Kingdom of Kakheti in 1624 and occupied Tbilisi, the capital of Kakheti. The Shah appointed Rostom Khan as the governor of Kakheti and forced the King of Kakheti, Teimuraz I, to flee to Russia. Rostom Khan ruled Kakheti for the next six years.
