Abd al-Karim Qasim was a leader of Iraq from 1958 to 1963. He was a member of the Ba'ath Party and was a strong supporter of Arab nationalism. Qasim was a fluent speaker of Arabic, which was the official language of Iraq at the time. He was also a strong supporter of the Arab League and believed that Iraq should play a leading role in the Arab world.
