Abd al-Karim Qasim was a Brigadier in the Iraqi army. He was a member of the Iraqi Socialist Party and was a key figure in the 1958 coup d'état that overthrew the monarchy. Qasim became the first Prime Minister of Iraq after the coup and ruled the country until he was overthrown in a military coup in 1963.
