Abd al-Karim Qasim was an Iraqi Army brigadier before he became a ruler. He was born in Tikrit in 1914 and joined the Iraqi Army in 1936. He rose through the ranks and became a brigadier in 1954. In 1958, he led a coup that overthrew the monarchy and established a republic. He ruled Iraq until he was overthrown and killed in a coup in 1963.
