After the 1963 Ramadan Revolution, Abd al-Karim Qasim was executed. Qasim had been the leader of Iraq since 1958, and had been a key figure in the 1958 revolution that overthrew the monarchy. The 1963 revolution was led by the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, and Qasim was accused of being a communist and of being too close to the Soviet Union.
