Abdullah Azzam was an Islamic scholar, theologian, and the founder of the Maktab al-Khidamat, or "Services Bureau", which later became al-Qaeda. He was born in Palestine in 1941 and studied Islamic law at the University of Damascus. In the 1960s, he became involved in the Palestinian resistance movement and fought against Israel in the Six-Day War.
