After the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, Azzam took particular interest in South Asia. He believed that the region was ripe for an Islamic revolution, and he set up training camps for mujahideen from the region. He also worked to establish ties between the mujahideen and Islamic groups in other countries, such as Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
