Azzam's ideology was deeply influenced by Sayyid Qutb, an Egyptian Islamic scholar who was executed in 1966 for his opposition to the Egyptian government. Qutb believed that the Muslim world had fallen into a state of jahiliyya, or ignorance, and that it was necessary to return to the original teachings of Islam in order to restore it to its former glory.
