Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah (584-639) was one of the Companions of Prophet Muhammad, a leading figure in the early Muslim community, and a military commander. He was a close friend and confidant of the Prophet, and one of the first to convert to Islam. He played a key role in the early Muslim conquests, and was eventually appointed as the governor of Syria.
