Adolfo Suárez, the leader of Spain from 1976 to 1981, is credited with ushering in Spain's transition to democracy. Suárez had been appointed prime minister by King Juan Carlos I in 1976, and he immediately set about dismantling the authoritarian regime of Francisco Franco. Suárez legalized political parties, freed political prisoners, and held elections for a new parliament in 1977.
