Adolfo Suarez was appointed as the Prime Minister by King Juan Carlos in 1976 to bring about democracy in Spain. Suarez was a member of the Francoist regime, but he had come to believe that Spain needed to move towards democracy. He introduced a number of reforms, including the legalization of political parties and the holding of free elections.
