The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) was the party that Agostinho Neto led in the independence war from 1961–1974. The MPLA was founded in 1956 by Neto and other nationalist leaders, and it fought for the independence of Angola from Portuguese colonial rule. The MPLA won the Angolan War of Independence in 1974, and Neto became the first president of independent Angola.
