Ahmed I was born in Istanbul, the capital of the Ottoman Empire, in 1590. He was the son of Sultan Mehmed III and his concubine Handan Sultan. Ahmed I succeeded his father to the throne in 1603 and ruled for 22 years. During his reign, the Ottoman Empire continued to expand, conquering parts of Persia and Central Asia.
