Ahmed I ascended to the throne of the Ottoman Empire on November 22, 1603, following the death of his father, Mehmed III. He was the second son of Mehmed III, and his mother was Handan Sultan. Ahmed I was a young man at the time of his accession, and he was not expected to be a successful ruler.
