Ahmed Sékou Touré was the first president of Guinea, and Samori Ture was his great grandfather. Samori Ture was a Fula leader who established independent Islamic rule in the western Sudan region in the 19th century. He was a successful military commander and a skilled diplomat, and he was able to unite the many ethnic groups of the region under his rule.
