Lansana Conté succeeded Ahmed Sékou Touré as president of Guinea. Conté had been a military officer and served as chief of staff of the Guinean armed forces under Touré. After Touré's death in 1984, Conté led a military coup and became president. He ruled Guinea for over 24 years, until his death in 2008.
