Akebono Tarō was the first non-Japanese born wrestler to reach yokozuna, the highest rank in sumo wrestling. Born in American Samoa, Akebono began sumo wrestling at the age of 15 and quickly rose through the ranks. He became the first foreign-born wrestler to reach the rank of ozeki, or second highest rank, in 1993. Akebono continued to dominate the sumo world, winning two consecutive championships in 1993 and 1994.
