Al-Masudi was the first Arab geographer and is considered one of the greatest early Muslim scholars. He was born in Baghdad in 896 and died in 956. He wrote several books on history, geography, and travel, including The Meadows of Gold and Mines of Gems, which is considered one of the most important sources of information about the Islamic world in the Middle Ages.
