Alain LeRoy Locke was the first African-American Rhodes Scholar. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1886. He attended Harvard University, where he studied philosophy and literature. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford in England. After graduating from Oxford, Locke returned to the United States and became a professor at Howard University.
