Alain Mimoun, the French marathon runner, was born Ali Mimoun Ould Kacha on July 15, 1921. He was born in Oujda, Morocco, which was then a French protectorate. Mimoun was raised in a poor family and worked as a street sweeper and a waiter before he started running. He won the gold medal in the marathon at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne.
