At the age of 37, Stanley Matthews retired from playing professional football. He had played for Blackpool for 21 years, making 541 appearances and scoring 189 goals. He also played for England 73 times, scoring 11 goals. After retiring from playing, Matthews became a manager, and later a football ambassador. He was knighted in 1965.
