Alexander Haig was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 24, 1924. He was the first American of Irish descent to serve as Secretary of State. He served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1973, rising to the rank of four-star general. He was also a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1973 to 1974.
