Alexander Mackenzie achieved his major accomplishment in 1793 when he became the first European to travel from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean via the Northwest Passage. He travelled overland from the mouth of the Mackenzie River to the Pacific Ocean, a distance of over 2,700 kilometres. His journey was a major feat of exploration and helped to open up the Northwest Passage to European trade.
