Alexander of Battenberg was born on April 5, 1857. He was a German prince who served as the first Prince of Bulgaria from 1879 to 1886. Born into the House of Battenberg, a morganatic branch of the House of Hesse-Darmstadt, Alexander was the son of Prince Alexander of Hesse and Julia Hauke. He pursued a military career in the Russian army before being elected Prince of Bulgaria in 1879.
