In 1282, Charles I of Anjou commissioned the construction of a new royal residence in Naples, the Castel Nuovo. This was built on the site of an earlier castle that had been built by the Normans in the 11th century. The new castle was a much larger and more impressive structure, and it became the main residence of the Angevin kings of Naples.
