Alfonso V recaptured Naples in 1442, after the death of Queen Joanna II, who had bequeathed the kingdom to her illegitimate son, Louis III, Duke of Anjou. Alfonso, the king of Aragon, claimed the throne of Naples as the great-grandson of King Robert the Wise. Louis's claim was also supported by the French king, Charles VII.
