Besides being a politician, Alfred Deakin was also a barrister. He was admitted to the bar in 1876 and practiced law in Melbourne until 1886, when he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly. He served as premier of Victoria from 1889 to 1890 and from 1894 to 1899, and as prime minister of Australia from 1903 to 1904 and from 1905 to 1908.
