Ana Brânză, also known as Ana Maria Popescu, is the first Romanian chess grandmaster among women, and the second of all time, after Elisabeta Polihroniade, who received the title in 1982. She achieved the GM title in 2002, being just 20 years old at the moment, and in the same year she became the first Romanian woman to have crossed the 2500 Elo mark.
