Andronikos I Komnenos's reign ended in a popular uprising after he became increasingly tyrannical. He had his son Alexios strangled, and then married his young widow, Maria of Antioch, himself. When she gave birth to a son, he proclaimed himself the child's father and made him heir to the throne. The people of Constantinople were outraged and revolted. Andronikos was captured and blinded, and then thrown into the Bosphorus.
