Antinous was born in Claudiopolis, which is now known as Bolu in modern Turkey. The city was part of the Roman province of Bithynia et Pontus, and was located on the Black Sea coast. Antinous was a favorite of the Roman emperor Hadrian, and was said to have drowned in the Nile River in 130 AD. His death was widely mourned, and he was later deified by Hadrian.
