Asaph Hall III discovered the two moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos, in 1877. Phobos is the larger and closer moon, and Deimos is the smaller and further moon. Phobos is about 15 miles across and orbits Mars in just over seven hours. Deimos is about 12 miles across and orbits Mars in about 30 hours. Both moons are thought to be captured asteroids.
