Until his death, Aslan Maskhadov was the president of Chechnya in exile. He was elected president of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria in 1997, but his government was forced into exile after the Russian invasion of Chechnya in 1999. Maskhadov continued to lead the Chechen resistance against Russian rule until his death in 2005.
