Maskhadov was killed in Tolstoy-Yurt, Chechnya, on 8 March 2005. He was the second president of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, which declared independence from Russia in 1991. Maskhadov was a key figure in the First Chechen War, which lasted from 1994 to 1996. After the war, Maskhadov was elected president of Chechnya.
