Aslan Maskhadov was a Chechen separatist leader who led the guerrilla resistance against the Russian army in the Second Chechen War. He was elected president of Chechnya in 1991 and served until 1996, when he was forced to flee to Chechnya following the defeat of the Chechen forces in the First Chechen War.
