Aslan Maskhadov was elected as the President of Chechnya only once. He was elected in 1996 and served until 2005, when he was killed in a Russian military operation. Maskhadov was a controversial figure, as he was seen by some as a hero for his fight for Chechen independence, but was also seen by others as a terrorist.
