Aslan Maskhadov was killed by Russian forces in 2005. He was the president of Chechnya from 1991 to 1996 and from 1997 to 2005. He was a key figure in the Chechen independence movement and was opposed to Russian rule. He was killed in a Russian air strike in the village of Tolstoy-Yurt.
