After the assassination of Aslan Maskhadov in 2005, Abdul Halim Sadulayev was elected President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. He was a former military commander and had been a close ally of Maskhadov. Sadulayev continued to lead the Chechen resistance against Russian rule, but he was killed in a Russian airstrike in 2006.
