Aslan Maskhadov served as a leader in both the Soviet and Chechen political systems. In the Soviet Union, he was a member of the Communist Party and served as the first secretary of the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic from 1991 to 1992. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he became the first president of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria from 1992 to 2005.
