Aung San was a member of the Communists Party of Burma for one year, from 1939 to 1940. He joined the party as a way to fight for Burmese independence from British rule. However, he soon became disillusioned with the party's ideology and tactics, and left to form his own political party, the Anti-Fascist People's Freedom League (AFPFL).
