In 1844, a merchant named Siyyid Ali-Muhammad, from Shiraz in Persia, declared himself to be the messenger of God and the first of a series of divine manifestations. He adopted the title of the Báb ("The Gate") and claimed that he had been sent by God to prepare the way for the return of Jesus.
