Babrak Karmal was born into a Tajik or Pashtun family in Darunta, in the Kabul province of Afghanistan. He was educated in Afghanistan and then in the Soviet Union, where he became a communist. He returned to Afghanistan and became a leader of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA). In 1978, he helped to overthrow the Afghan monarchy and became the president of Afghanistan.
