Babrak Karmal (1929 – 1996) was an Afghan communist revolutionary and politician. He was General Secretary of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) from 1979 to 1986 and President of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan from 1979 to 1986. He was also a Soviet client and close ally of the Soviet Union.
